'In Conversation with Fab5 Freddy & Special Guest Robert Williams'

As part of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events -Chicago House Music Festival & Conference, May 24-26 2018

Co-curated by Ron Trent and in conjunction with 'Keith Haring: The Chicago Mural' March 3 - September 23 2018

New York legend and Hip Hop pioneer Fab5 Freddy will be making a very special appearance as part of the Chicago House Music festival, discussing his artwork, current projects and his involvement with the New York Downtown scene. 

Fab also reflects on the 30th anniversary of 'Yo! MTV Raps', graffiti-as-public-art and Keith Haring's famous Chicago mural project in 1989. 

There will be multi-media discussion with classic photos, video clips and Q&A with audience members. 

Panel discussion, moderated by Vikki Tobak and Adrian Loving, will start at 6pm, with a special After-Set by Ron Trent from 8pm -11pm.

FRED BRATHWAITE AKA FAB 5 FREDDY

Born in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, Fred Brathwaite aka FAB 5 FREDDY began his artistic career creating graffiti pieces throughout New York City. In homage to Andy Warhol, Fab Freddy covered a subway car with Campbell’s soup cans, creating a classic of subway graffiti art. Moving on to painting on canvas, FAB 5 FREDDY exhibited work both here and abroad. His work created a bridge between the rising hip hop movement in Harlem and the Downtown New York art scene. Along with friendships with fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Harring, he has worked with pop culture icons ranging from Blondie to Queen Latifah, as well as appearing in films and televions shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent as well producing films such as Wild Style. ROBERT WILLIAMS

Born in New York City, now longterm Chicago resident, Robert Williams have been credited as a major component in the history of House music, having owned the famous venues 'The Warehouse' and 'Muzic Box' in Chicago City. Mr. Williams will help to set the context of 70s and 80s New York City in this discussion.

RON TRENT

Best known for being the co-founder of Prescription Records, Ron Trent is no stranger to New York City life, having relocated to NYC in the 90s and being an active participant in the underground music, dance and arts culture in the city. A longtime fan of Keith Haring, Ron Trent has collaborated with the City of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs to curate this very special gathering for the Chicago House Music Festival and Conference 2018.

VIKKI TOBAK

Vikki is a journalist, author and producer, she currently writes about culture, politics, arts and social justice. Author of "Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop" (Random House/Clarkson Potter Fall 2018), Vikki previously served as a TV network news producer and reporter covering technology, global politics and economy for CNN, Bloomberg News, TechTV, CBS MarketWatch and other leading media organizations. Born in Kazakhstan, fluent in Russian and raised in Detroit, Vikki's interest in the intersection of culture and political/social worlds drives her media work. 

ADRIAN LOVING

Loving has curated art exhibitions and public programming at various museums and cultural institutions in his 20-year career including the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art (NMAFA), The National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Art and Corcoran Gallery of Art, amongst many others. Loving’s active participation at music festivals, art fairs and conferences has further developed his unique perspective on contemporary pop-culture and issues of historical importance. Loving currently maintains a full-time faculty position as an Instructor of Visual Art, Film and Video at Georgetown Day School in Washington, DC. Prior to his current role, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Art and Graphic Design at University of Maryland College Park and Howard University.
